Susan Digilio: Artist of the Month

 

This Saturday at ReMADE Handmade Boutique, 133 Main Street, Beacon NY, you will have the opportunity to meet one of our long time, very gifted members, Sue of DigilioDesigns. You are probably familiar with some of Sue's work from this blog and from seeing her beautiful things at local shows, but this time, she will be presenting the original art that inspired many of her designs. You'll enjoy being able to linger over these one-of-a-kind pieces, discovering all the details. Sue even uses gold leaf and mica, as well as beeswax, in some of her original work! 

The show opens on Saturday, August 12 from 6 - 8PM, and runs for the rest of the month. It's also Second Saturday in Beacon, so there will be lots to explore. This weekend two of our makers will be participating in local Hudson Valley events. Yvonne, of Yvonne Laube Designs, will be included in the Dutchess Handmade Pop Up Shop, in Poughkeepsie. The shop will be open for your Spring and Mother's Day shopping through May 20. Look at the cute carved wood and copper necklace sets for mom and daughters. Yvonne can customize them for you, too.

Sarah, of SO Handmade, will be up in the capitol city of Albany on Saturday and Sunday for the Half Moon Market. What little mermaid wouldn't love this adorable cross-body bag on organic fabric? Sarah designs and hand silkscreens  her children's products on Eco-Friendly fabrics.

Woodland Print Deer Paper Cut by TinyLittleNest

Have you ever admired those beautiful and delicate paper snowflakes that seem so intricate that they must be next to impossible to create? Paper cutting arts appear worldwide, including the finely crafted designs created by the Pennsylvania Dutch craft called Fraktur.

On April 1, from 2 - 3PM, you can enjoy an introductory workshop with our member Yvonne, of Tiny Little Nest, at The Pine Plains Free Library. Yvonne will take you through a brief history of the craft and get you on your way to learning this intricate technique. What a lovely way to spend an afternoon! Plus, you will leave with your own creation. The workshop is free for ages 15 and older, but space is limited, so register soon.

A Wrinkle in Time

 

"Celebrating inventiveness, imagination and innovation; showcasing wearable artwork powered by the imagination of art and science" is how the d'Art Center in Norfolk Virginia describes their current show entitled The Time Machine. The show is part of the Wearable Arts Festival running from March 14 - April 29 in three locations throughout the city. Kathryn, of Huzzah! Unique, Handmade Wearables , has three of her wearable art, nuno felted shawls featured in the show. Two painters were inspiration for her work: Van Gogh and O'Keefe. If you are traveling to the area, you could add a stop to see all the wearable art inspired by both Art and Science to your itinerary.

 The holidays are a memory, the new year has been rung in, and Valentine's day is just over the horizon. This Saturday, you'll be able to catch Sue, of Digilio Designs, at a pop-up boutique at Dutch's Spirits in Pine Plains, Dutchess County NY. Over a dozen local artisans will be present.

Sue will be bringing a great selection of gifts for your valentine, so plan on visiting the distillery on Saturday from 12 - 5. Not only can you shop, but you will also be able to tour the hidden, underground spaces on the property where Dutch Schultz brewed his bootleg spirits during Prohibition.  Music, food and coffee with also be available. Our makers will be well represented this weekend in a variety of interesting events. Patti, of Get Glassy, is part of a show at The Howland Cultural Center in Beacon entitled Out Of The Fire. All work in this show was in some way formed by fire. You'll find Patti's fused glass jewelry and home decor items included. The show runs until the end of December.

Yvonne, of Yvonne Laube Designs, will be taking part in a holiday pop up at Poughkidsie on Sunday from 12-7PM.

Depending on how you feel, either the dreaded Black Friday weekend, or the real beginning of the exciting holiday shopping season is now upon us. Fortunately, there are options, and our Makers will be out there for your shopping pleasure. Remember, it's Small Business Saturday, so it's a great opportunity to support local, artisan, handcrafted items. Here's just a small sample of the beautiful things you'll find:

Sue, of Digilio Designs, has a selection of her work at The Hudson Valley Artisan Market ,in Dutchess County, N.Y. at the beautiful Locust Grove Estate in Poughkeepsie. Also in Dutchess County, Kathryn of Huzzah! Unique Handmade Wearables, will be back at the Dutchess Community College Annual Craft Fair for another year. This show is in it's 45th year and features two large buildings full of handmade gifts for everyone.

We Makers have been busy all year, but now that the air has turned chilly, things are really heating up! There are several great events happening that offer wonderful opportunities to get your holiday shopping started (or finished!). Here's where we will be:

Yvonne, of Yvonne Laube Designs, and Sue, of Digilio Designs, have a selection of goods at Dutchess Handmade Holiday Pop-UP that runs until December 17. The Holiday Pop-Up is sponsored by Arts Mid-Hudson and is in it's third year. Yvonne will also be in Kingston at the Hudson Valley Hullabaloo this weekend.

On Saturday, Gwen from Beyond The Picket Fence, will be back at the Middletown BID Farmers' Market with her selection of hand crafted, natural and sustainable bath and body products for women and men. Why not try one of her unique soaps crafted from some of the best local beers?

 This Sunday Hester, of Hester's Studio , will return to Sullivan County and The Harvest Festival at Bethel Woods, with more of her collection of hand-built ceramics. This Sunday's Festival theme is Rustic for the Home. Hester, from Ulster County, creates figurative ceramics and home decor.

Here is a bit of insight into her world: "Nature surrounds me in the Hudson Valley and has heavily influenced my work. I draw inspiration from the shapes, colors, and textures inherent to the landscape, and strive to create simple pieces for everyday use with the desire to express the beauty with utility. Each piece is handbuilt with slab construction, using a strong white stoneware clay. I give much attention to the layering of textures, creating asymmetrical compositions. My functional pieces utilize images inspired by different elements of daily life; landscapes, textiles, foliage, food, flora and fauna. "

Huh? If you're curious about what Camelids are, and you'd like to get up close and personal with one, then you're in luck this Sunday. The Rosehaven Alpaca Festival at Bethel Woods will be overflowing with these lovely, long-necked South American natives. They produce the "fiber of the gods," soft and hypoallergenic, so anyone can wear it. 

Kathryn, of Huzzah! Unique Handmade Wearables, feels right at home at this event. She'll be featuring a wide selection of her hand knit accessories, using only the finest fibers, including alpaca.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a more picturesque, bucolic setting in our valley then the riverfront landing park in Garrison, N.Y. This Saturday and Sunday, you'll be able to enjoy the lovely setting and have the opportunity to shop and meet over 80 fine artists and craftspeople at the 47th Annual Garrison Fine Crafts Fair. Our members, Kathryn, of Huzzah! Unique, Handmade Wearables, and Sue, of Digilio Designs, will both be there. Sue brings a varied selection of note cards, art prints, pendants and her original art.
